Whinstone Cottage is quirky and characterful with direct rural views down to the sea at Embleton beach. Built from the local whinstone, once the Quarry Master’s offices, it oozes period charm and is set in the heart of Embleton village, walking distance from a number of great pubs and The Village Farm Shop. The Owners have furnished it in keeping with the era, with the grandfather clock in the tiled hallway being your first glimpse, when you arrive. The sitting/dining room décor is designed to complement the Wedgwood pieces on the traditional dresser; the Publisher and Actress Owners have lovingly supplied a range of books to curl up and browse and some personal pictures and sketches add to the charm. The village is steeped in history but is perhaps best known for the beach. Embleton Bay is a ½ mile away, across a links golf course and through the dunes. Voted best beach in the Country by both Countryfile viewers and Mumsnet, the golden sands stretch for miles as part of England’s Coastal Path; the iconic Dunstanburgh Castle, rises up from the cliffs at one end above the dunes and it’s not hard to see why this location is designated an Area Of Outstanding Natural Beauty. This charming cottage is perfect for beach lovers, nature and bird watchers, golfers and walkers.
Walk down the hill to the beach, it’ll take about 10 minutes from the cottage. At the bottom of the hill is Dunstanburgh Castle Golf Clubhouse and you cross the links course and dunes to get onto the sand. Once on the beach you can choose to walk either left or right along England’s Coastal Path. Right, takes you past Dunstanburgh Castle, towards Craster and beyond. Left is for Low Newton, home of the acclaimed Ship Inn, and onwards towards Beadnell. The nearest pub to the cottage is The Grey’s Inn, directly opposite, a traditional pub in the heart of the Village. The Village Farm Shop sells local produce of every kind – we recommend the sausage or Bombay rolls! There is a wealth of historical and recreational options nearby: Alnwick Castle and Garden, for history buffs, those with green-fingers and the Harry Potter fans (the Castle became Hogwarts in the films); Lilidorei, is the largest children’s playground in the world and is situated near the Alnwick Gardens. There’s also Bamburgh Castle; Lindisfarne; the Farne Islands, with departures leaving regularly from Seahouses harbour in the season; perfect for bird and nature lovers generally; Low Newton, near ‘The Ship Inn’, has bird hides beside some nature reserve pools and ‘The Ship’ has a microbrewery for a pint when you are finished and before the walk back home! The other Coastal Route villages are teeming with more Castles and food and drink options and there is so much to explore, over 50% of our Guests are returnees, as they didn’t see everything the first time!
Whinstone Cottage accommodates 3 people in two bedrooms (or 4 people if there are two small children in the party and the child’s trundle bed is also used). This single storey cottage has a sitting/dining room with stripped wood floors, exposed traditional stonework, log-burner and SMART TV for you to watch your own subscription channels. This room leads onto the garden, where the hedges are deliberately kept low to allow for views across the adjacent garden and the sea views from the comfort of the sofa! The cosy kitchen, with tiled floor, is farmhouse style, so choose to eat at the scrubbed wood table, or the dining table in the sitting/dining room. The double bedroom has William Morris patterned curtains, traditional antique furniture and direct access to the bathroom. The single bedroom has a small cloakroom with wc and sink off it. The garden is accessed via patio doors from the sitting/dining room. Parking is outside the front of the property. Whinsone Cottage is a no smoking/vaping property.

A garden table and 4 chairs are provided. To the front there is parking for one car, which must be tucked in below the sitting room windows to allow access for neighbours cars. Please note that the road surface is both path/original road/cobbles/whinstone and is not flat or maintained.
WiFi included, a SMART TV allows you to access your own subscription channels. Electric radiators supply heating, thermostatically controlled in each room. Hot water is delivered by timed immersion heater and the electric shower.
