NEW!! Heron Cottage is set in the heart of Embleton village, walking distance from a number of great pubs and The Village Farm Shop. The village is steeped in history (it has a Norman church) but is perhaps best known for the beach. Embleton Bay is a ½ mile away, through the village, down the hill and across a links golf course and through the dunes. Voted best beach in the Country by both Countryfile viewers and Mumsnet, the golden sands stretch for miles as part of England’s Coastal Path; the iconic Dunstanburgh Castle, rises up from the cliffs at one end above the dunes and it’s not hard to see why this location is designated an Area Of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The cottage is perfect for beach lovers, nature and bird watchers, golfers, walkers and experienced paddle boarders and surfers.
Walk through the village and down the hill to the beach, it’ll take about 10-15 minutes from the cottage. At the bottom of the hill is Dunstanburgh Castle Golf Clubhouse and you cross the links course and dunes to get onto the sand. Once on the beach you can choose to walk either left or right along England’s Coastal Path. Right, takes you past Dunstanburgh Castle, towards Craster and beyond. Left is for Low Newton, home of The Ship Inn and onwards towards Beadnell. The nearest pub to the cottage is the Dunstanburgh Castle Hotel, which has a dog friendly lounge and bar, plus beer garden. The Grey’s Inn is a traditional pub in the heart of the village. The Village Farm Shop sells local produce of every kind – we recommend the sausage or Bombay rolls! There is a wealth of historical and recreational options nearby: Alnwick Castle and Garden, for the Harry Potter fans; Lilidorei, is the largest childen’s playground in the world and is situated near the Alnwick Gardens. There’s also Bamburgh Castle; Lindisfarne; the Farne Islands, with departures leaving regularly from Seashouses harbour, in the season; perfect for bird and nature lovers generally; Low Newton, near ‘The Ship Inn’, has bird hides beside some nature reserve pools and ‘The Ship’ has a microbrewery for a pint when you are finished and before the walk back home! The other Coastal Route villages are teeming with more Castles and food and drink options and there is so much to explore – over 50% of our Guests are returnees, as they didn’t see everything the first time and are keen to come back for more!

We stayed in Heron Cottage last week, due to a delay in the purchase of our new property. The Cottage is excellent, well presented and in a fantastic location for the amenities of the village and the beach for walking the dog. The service from Beach & Quiet was second-to-none and meant that we had the reassurance of a lovely place to stay, whilst our sale was concluding. We obviously live locally, but would have no hesitation in recommending Heron Cottage and Beach & Quiet to others in the future.
The McManus Party, October 2024
Hi Jude and Jane,
Apologies for the slightly delayed response but it's been busy since we got back.
In terms of feedback,
Service: That was great ...... The welcome basket was great and gave us a mix of essentials and treats. Advice on where to go etc. was very useful.
Property: Standard of the property was excellent and the layout for us was perfect. There was only the 2 of us plus Max so the large double room and bathroom was all we needed upstairs. Downstairs the large open plan kitchen / dining / living area with the TV was perfect. Great corner sofa .... TV had plenty on it and the kitchen was well equipped. The utility room was great and had things dried quickly. The front living area was mainly used by Max when he wanted to have a rest as he liked to lay on the rug and carpet, plus was good to use for him on a night in his donut...
Area: The village was great. Had pizzas from Embers which were lovely and then used the pub nearly every day, which was very warm, welcoming and friendly. Max definitely liked it as he made a beeline for it every time we came back from the beach! Similarly the hotel was really friendly and good with Max and the fish and chips take away was very good. Walks as you know anyway are plentiful and great going north or south on the beach, plus went out the back, over the fields and back round via High Newton which was a good change. Only times we needed to use the car was to go to Alnwick and Bamburgh on a couple of days. Nice to be able to not have to think about driving! Local shop had all we needed and some great produce. A bit more expensive than some but certainly worth it, some lovely produce in it and it needs to work as a business, so fully understand why it's a little more.
All in all thoroughly enjoyed the area and property and are already planning when we can come back in 2025 and hope we're as lucky with the weather!
Thanks again for all your help for the visit and as I say certainly looking to return.
Kind regards
